In 2010, the German Open will take place for the 12th time in Mülheim an der Ruhr. 1975-1977, 1980-1982 and 2005-2009 the world`s best badminton players were guest in the town in North Rhine-Westphalia, too.

 

The first International German Badminton Championships were organised in 1955 in the former capital of Germany, Bonn - two years after the German Badminton Association (DBV) was founded. Since 1955, the most important tournament for the DBV took place every year with exception of 1970, 1979 and 1998. Until 1962 the championships were presented in Bonn. Since 1963 the tournament took place in several cities all over Germany.

 

In 1981 the International German Badminton Championships for the first time were allowed to call themselves "Open", because prize money raised to 20.000 US-$ (more than amateurs were allowed to earn). Since 2005 prize money is 80.000 US-$.

Up to now german players were successful at the German Open only in 1975: More than 30 years ago Brigitte Steden and Marieluise Zizmann won the women`s doubles. In addition, Zizmann – together with Wolfgang Bochow - claimed the title in mixed doubles.
